I am working to develop an AI curriculum, starting at the Kindergarten level.

Step 1: Understanding AI

This involves discussing what is natural versus what humans create.

What is a computer? Examine the computer being used and discuss its components.

How does AI interact with us? AI can listen through various devices, recognize faces on phones, and engage with us through our typing and voice.

AI was developed by humans to interact with us and create amazing things.

Step 2: Use AI to create an image:

I recommend visiting Canva.com and entering a simple prompt based on the child's idea. Today I used:

Create an image of Scarlet and her dragon. The image should be simple enough for a kindergarten-level book. The AI might ask you whether you want a book cover or a page illustration. For this picture, I used a page illustration

Step 3: Create a story.

Allow the child to request a story written at the kindergarten level. An example could be: “Create a 50-word story about Scarlet and her dragon at the kindergarten level.”

The response I received was:

Scarlet has a big, green dragon. His name is Max. They play tag in the park. Max flies high, and Scarlet laughs. They eat snacks and read books. At night, Max curls up by Scarlet’s bed. “Good night, Max,” she whispers. Max smiles. They dream of flying adventures together.

This is an effective way to introduce AI to kindergarteners. I anticipate that they will generate more image ideas and stories for AI to create throughout the school year.
